Bolgheri: where the land meets the sea
Where we are
A natural theatre between the sea and the hills
Bolgheri is the story of a dream and a passion: the desire to create a new way of interpreting Tuscan wine. Here, where the sea meets the hills, the myth of the “Tuscan Bordeaux” was born, made famous by wines that changed the history of Italian winemaking, such as Sassicaia.
Nowhere else has the harmony between nature and human vision produced such extraordinary results. Bolgheri is the result of the meeting between a unique winemaking potential and the foresight of those who chose to cultivate international varieties and pursue absolute quality. Today, that dream has become a reality recognized around the world, synonymous with elegance, balance and authenticity.
In the heart of Castagneto Carducci, Terre dei Ghelfi preserves this heritage and interprets it with a contemporary spirit. The metalliferous hills gently descend toward the sea, while the vineyards stretch between slopes and plains caressed by the Tyrrhenian breeze. It is a living and ever-changing land, where every parcel tells a different story, giving our wines complexity, balance and finesse.
The climate
A climate that shapes elegance and freshness
The position of Bolgheri gives this land a unique microclimate, unlike any other along the Tuscan coast. Here, the sea and the hills are in constant dialogue: the sea breezes, often pushed inland by the nearby archipelago, blow for most of the year, caressing the vines and keeping the air clean and fresh.
The natural amphitheatre surrounding Bolgheri holds these winds, letting them circulate gently among the rows without ever dispersing. This breeze cools, dries and protects, contributing to the health of the vines and the finesse of the wines.
The milder temperatures compared to other coastal areas allow for a slow and harmonious ripening, enhancing elegance and balance.
But what truly makes Bolgheri special is the light: intense, golden, reflected by the sea. A light that accompanies every season and makes the landscape vibrant, almost suspended in time. This luminosity, together with deep and generous soils, allows the vines to find water even during the driest periods, ensuring stability and natural freshness to the fruit.
The soils
Multiform soils, marine origin and alluvial flows
In Bolgheri, the land tells a long story of transformation: once sea, then rivers and hills, today vineyards that preserve this ancient heritage.
The soil has a dual origin, both marine and alluvial. The sands, rich in fossils, bear witness to the ancient sea, while the sediments brought down from the metalliferous hills have created deep, mineral-rich terrain. This combination forms a mosaic of textures and characteristics that make each vineyard unique and special.
For this reason, different grape varieties coexist in Bolgheri, each able to interpret the land in its own way: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Franc and Vermentino.
From this harmony of elements comes the elegance of our wines, which capture in every sip the true essence of Bolgheri.
Today it is recognized throughout the world as one of the most prestigious wine regions in Italy, thanks to its unique natural conditions, the care of the people, and the vision of the producers who believed in its potential.
It is here, in this perfect balance between sea and hills, that we too have chosen to build our home, a place to live, cultivate and welcome, sharing with our guests the beauty and authentic soul of Bolgheri.
